Administration representatives and Republican lawmakers have hailed the enforcement of a 2020 US narco-trafficking indictment, while Democratic voices have condemned the action as a breach of Venezuela's right to govern itself.
Administration Reactions: Celebration and Justification
The nation's top prosecutor proclaimed that Maduro and his wife confront indictments in a New York court, including conspiracy related to drug terrorism, drug smuggling, and weapons violations. "The defendants will soon confront the complete wrath of American law on US territory," the statement continued. It finished by commending the president for seeking justice and saluting the courageous armed forces for a highly effective operation.
"The Venezuelan leader is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela... Maduro is the leader of a drug trafficking cartel... and he is under indictment for flooding drugs into the US," said the US Secretary of State.
The Vice-President supported this view, stating that the administration had offered several chances for resolution but was clear that drug trafficking must cease. "He is the newest person to find out that President Trump keeps his word," the statement concluded.
Opposition Criticism: Accusations of Lying and Militarism
In contrast, opposition reaction was immediate and scathing. Lawmakers accused the administration of turning an anti-narcotics campaign into a regime-change action.
One senator accused that administration officials had looked the Senate directly, promising the mission was not about overthrowing a government. "We distrusted them then and we see now that they knowingly deceived us," the lawmaker posted.
