No fewer than thirteen people perish and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the previous administration, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a primary political opposition urged an immediate suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
