A defense official has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the possible threats posed by Chinese cars, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified information in all cars.
Security Advice for Defence Staff
During a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about classified information while riding in China-made cars.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in every single automobile, to only have those secret talks in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Security Background
This announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese-made buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by defence officials.
The broader security situation underscores the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions habits.
